THE RADZIWILL’S CASTLE
The Radziwills' Castle in the town of Neswizh is an outstanding monument of Belarusian architecture of the 16th century which has developed over the years from a formidable citadel into a representative palace-and-park ensemble with a huge mass of parks.
Neswizh Castle which has survived to date was founded in 1583 by the magnate Radziwill nicknamed Sirotka (the Orphan). He began building his residence on the grounds of a mid-16th century wooden structure. The Italian architect Giovanni Maria Bernardoni was in charge of construction.
The castle was built next to the town on a hill washed by the River Ushi. A 20-meter high rampart and other fortifications turned it into an unassailable fortress.
In architecture of the castle one can observe the elements of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicism. These attest to the fact that construction of the complex went through many stages and that artistic achievements of different historical epochs can be found in it.
While being gradually revamped, detached buildings were joined by architectural inserts and formed the main courtyard surrounded by buildings (50x80 meters).
The central building which undergone substantial renovation in the 18th century is noted for its architectural and artistic solution. Pilasters, relief decorations, and sculptural pieces lend plastic properties to the facade while extensive modeling on a high frontispiece with a coat of arms makes it elegant and solemn.
Internal decoration of the palace was distinctively splendid and rich. Around one thousand paintings were exhibited in the picture gallery. The library stocked rare manuscripts and editions published in former times. The archive contained a great deal of historic acts, charters, and letters (including letters written by Peter the Great, Louis V, Louis VI, CharlesXII, and Bohdan Khmelnytsky).
One of the halls housed a huge stock of armor, Marshal's batons, etc.
Today, efforts are being undertaken to revive the former grandeur of this listed building.
The Radziwills' Castle in Neswizh has been placed on the state list of historical and cultural heritage of the Republic of Belarus and is rightly deemed to be one of the symbols of national artistic culture.
