Bildquelle: www.nbrb.by	Die Übersetzung ins Deutsche ist in Vorbereitung THE CHURCH-FORTRESS IN SYNKOVICHI The Synkovichi church-fortress is a unique pattern of temples of the so-called fortification type, embodying images of a castle and a sacral construction in its architecture. It was built at the end of the 15th and at the beginning of the 16th centuries in the village of Synkovichi (now Zelvensk district). Such churches were erected at that time in Central and Eastern Europe. These monuments are characterized by a compact massive size with a high gable roof and by the presence of corner towers with loopholes. In the plastic aspect of its architecture, elements of Old Belarusian and Gothic architecture were used. The first ones include an arcuated band embracing apses and two eastern round towers at the level of a lower tier. The other ones include acute arches, lierne vaults, faceted shapes of western towers, and a high-pitched roof. Numerous decorative recesses on high frontons, relieving the heaviness of walls, indicate the influence of the Renaissance science of style. The specific architectural features of this temple have no analogues. In this sense it is a masterpiece of Belarusian architecture.
