DNIEPRA-SOZHSKY Wildlife Reserve
The Dniepra-Sozhsky State Wildlife Reserve with an area of 14.6 thousand hectares has been established near the country's southern border - at the confluence of the Dniepra and Sozh Rivers. Their numerous branches, backwaters, and flood plane lakes as well as ridges, lowlands, depressions, and vast tracts of oak forests add scenic beauty to the landscape of the conservation area, 15 plant species that grow within the confines of the reserve are on the Red List of the Republic of Belarus: the Lilyleaf Ladybell, Upright Clematis, Violet, Water Chestnut, Spiny Naiad, Martagon Lily, Rumson, Umbrosa Sedge, White Water Lily, and others.
The significance of the protected area for conservation of nature has won international recognition. The refuge provides a habitat for a number of species that are threatened with extinction in Europe, including the Kingfisher, Roller, Black Kite, and others. 18 species of rare animals occur in the forests and waters of the sanctuary. They include fish - the Sterlet; birds - the Little Bittern, Great White Egret, Oyster Catcher, Curlew, Little Gull, Little Owl, Lesser Grey Shrike; and mammals - the Hazel Dormouse and Badger.
The Lilyleaf Ladybell and Sterlet provide fine examples of unique fauna and flora of the wildlife reserve.
Lilyleaf Ladybell (Adenophoralilifolia). A perennial with a strong ribbed stem growing to 120 cm tall. Its jagged leaves are arranged in a spiral pattern and pendulous flowers form a spike. A bell-like corolla, with a long pistil, is pale blue or pale violet.
Open woodlands provide a habitat for single specimens or clumps of the Lilyleaf Ladybell. It can grow in one place up to one hundred years.
Sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus). A big fish that is up to 16 kg in weight. It has a deep brown dorsum, a yellowish or whitish ventral side and grey fins. Its oblong spindle-shaped body is covered with small bony plates (scuta). The front part of the head is elongated, pointed, and slightly flattened. The mouth, on the underside of the snout, is preceded by barbels.
The Sterlet inhabits the deepest stretches of the rivers - vortices and depressions. In the spring, it fights its way upstream and reaches suitable breeding and summering grounds. In late autumn, it comes back to the lower reaches of the river and spends most of the winter in a sedentary state. Adult fish feed on crustaceans and larvae. N. A. Yourgenson
