On July 27, 2005, a silver proof 100-ruble coin minted in 2003 and celebrating the Belarusian ballet won the San Francisco International Numismatic Contest established over 25 years ago by the famous American publishing house Krause Publications. It became the top vote-getter in the Most Artistic Coin category and was selected as the Coin of the Year - an honorary title - by the panel of numismatic judges. (It is worth noting that another Belarusian coin -the Narachansky National Park. Mute Swan silver and copper/nickel coin minted in two denominations - won the Best Crown category). As a result, demand for Belarusian coins skyrocketed. The National Bank had to urgently increase the mintages of all coins it was putting in circulation. As for the 2003 Belarusian Ballet coin, it became both a rarity and a brand at the same time. The issuance on December 28, 2005, of the Belarusian Ballet gold commemorative coins could not satisfy the rush demand therefor. That is why, in order to meet the needs of coin collectors and admirers of rare stuff, on December 22, 2006, gold commemorative coins featuring the image of the famous 2003 coin on the back were issued.
