| ICE HOCKEY
Ice hockey originated in the middle of the 19th century in Canada and very soon it became a really national sporting event in this country.
In 1894 the Governor-general of Canada, English Lord Stanley Preston, a great admirer of this sport, set up a cup to award the best hockey team. And now the Stanley Cup is one of the most prestigious prizes in ice hockey.
For a long time the leaders of the NHL and the organizers of Olympic competitions could not find common language. At last, in1998 a long-awaited agreement was signed: the NHL gave its consent to allow its leading hockey players to go to Nagano. There, in Nagano, the Belarusian National team, which had got the right to take part in the Olympic games for the first time, took fifth place. And four years later our ice knights made everybody speak about them again in Salt Lake City. The National team stormed the pedestal, but stopped on the fourth step. However, the masterly play of the Belarusians, who had knocked the Swedes out of the contest for medals, made the fans live through the unforgettable minutes.
