| ROWING
Rowing is considered to be one of the most dynamic sports events in the right. It is hard to say now when competitive rowing was held first; however, it is known for sure that rowboat races were staged in ancient Egypt on the Nile River as far back as 45 centuries ago. In Hellenic and Roman writings one can come across the records of rowing contests. Yet, the first officially registered rowing competition of the present took place in 1715 on the Thames in England, when a speed race of professional watermen was organized by Thomas Doggett, a true rowing devotee and an actor.
With time they began to distinguish in rowing between its specific events, among them sculling, canoeing and kayaking, slalom racing, and the so-called folk rowing are the most popular while poling is seldom met with. Sculling as a self-sustaining event is cultivated in over 80 countries worldwide. The International Rowing Federation (FISA) was founded in 1892, and next summer the first continental championship took place in Europe. However, it was not until 1962 that world championships started to be held, though sculling was included in the Olympic Games as early as 1900.
In the mid-20th century sculling gained particular popularity in Belarus and shortly brought fame to native athletes. To achieve a success, oarsmen "travel" hundreds and thousands of kilometers on the water, lift tons of metal as weights and dumbbells, go never-ending cross-country running in severe winter cold and autumn slush... It is only by the sweat of the brow during intense trainings that one can stand on a podium and enjoy medal glance of sporting glory. Today, the name of Yekaterina Karsten-Khodotovitch, the champion of two Olympic regattas (1996 - Atlanta, 2000 - Sidney), is uttered with admiration far beyond the bounds of Belarus. The road to sporting Olympus for Belarusian masters of sculls was paved in 1980 by renowned Yelena Khloptseva.
