WRESTLING

Wrestling is "a contest between two competitors without weapons, beating, and fight." At all times and in all nations it has been an efficient means of developing in human beings strength, deftness, stamina, and will.
At present, four types of wrestling are practiced: classic, freestyle, judo, and sambo. The first three are included in world and European championships, whereas only freestyle and classic wrestling contests have been introduced into the Olympic Games.
The basic principles of modern wrestling were devised in the late 18th and 19th centuries in Europe. It was highly developed in France and therefore it came to be known as French wrestling. Later it was called classic and thereafter Greco-Roman wrestling.
Freestyle wrestling appeared later. Contestants in this style are freer in choosing techniques - leg grips, trippings, etc. are allowed. Classic wrestling forbids moves using legs and holds made below the waist.
In freestyle wrestling, any punching, holds causing pain, strangleholds, wrapping the legs about an opponent, or holding the clothing which is typical of judo and sambo wrestlers is forbidden. Athletes wear special open one-piece singlets and soft shoes. The competitors meet in one of the two main positions: upright (standing) position and ground position (on the mat). Bouts are of three three-minute periods. If during this time neither contestant has won a victory, the bout will go into a three-minute overtime period and will continue until one of them reaches three points or throws the other cleanly on his back, i.e. pins both his opponent's shoulders on the mat.
Freestyle wrestling was introduced into the Olympic Games of 1904, and ten sets of medals are awarded in this event. There are ten weight classes in Olympic and international events, which enables virtually every athlete to test his skills on even terms.
In the Republic of Belarus, freestyle wrestling enjoys great popularity, which, by and large, is due to the fact that no other freestyle wrestler in the world holds as many titles as our fellow countryman, Alexander Medved, who won three Olympic gold medals, seven world and three European titles, and emerged victorious in nine USSR championships.
For over 30 years now international freestyle wrestling tournaments for A. Medved's prizes have been held in Minsk annually. Taking part in these tournaments are the world's standouts - Olympic, world, and European championships' gold, silver and bronze medallists.
In Belarus, nearly 6000 people practice freestyle wrestling under the tutelage of more than 200 competent coaches. Says Alexander Medved, "Mass involvement in sports is the key to future victories. It is only mass sports that will help us discover fresh talents which are plentiful in our land."
