| SHOT PUT. 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES
Unlike discus-throwing, shot-putting does not have roots that trace back to antiquity - this is a rather young way of displaying human physical capacity. As an independent sport, the event was included in the first modern Olympic Games which were held in 1896 in Athens. For comparison, javelin-throwing known to the ancient Greeks who were practicing it at their Olympiads was included in the program of our athletes as late as 1908 (that is, even later than hammer-throwing which has been an Olympic event since 1900).
Shot-putting which requires exceptional power and stamina as well as lengthy and hard training is not regarded as an easy sport. Obviously, it is for this reason that the women's discus and javelin competitions began in 1928 and 1932 respectively, whilst the women's shot put became a medal event only in the first post-war Games held in 1948 in London.
When it was decided to hold modern Olympic Games in Athens, the putters and throwers got a special surprise from the organizers: their competition was arranged in the famous Alpheus valley where the ancient Olympians contested. And it is most pleasing that in the native land of the 2004 Olympic Games the gold in the women's shot-putting was won by the Belarusian athlete Yanina Provalinskaya (Korolchik).
