Freestyle skiing is a young sport which has a lot of admirers among athletes and spectators.
Freestyle began with skiing acrobatics as a leisure sport popular among amateur alpine skiers. It is considered that the history of freestyle it is current form dates back to 1971 when the first official freestyle skiing competition was held in New Hampshire (USA). Before that, freestyle was nothing else but business: it was an alpine skiing show aimed at entertaining holidaymakers and deriving profit.
Present day freestyle is a three-event alpine skiing competition, i.e. moguls (skiers’ race down a steep run over bumps with jumps), aerials (ski jumping with acrobatic elements), and ballet (figure skiing performed by music). Moguls and aerials are medal events at the Olympic Winter Games, while ballet still is a demonstration event. In all events athletes are judged on the organization and complexity of the flight, spectacular aspects, technical skills, and artistic impression. In 1978, freestyle competitions’ regulations were approved by the International Ski Federation (FIS)and the first World Cup series was staged. World Championships have been held since 1986, whilst in Albertville (1992) and Lillehammer (1994) freestyle skiers competed for Olympic medals.
For Belarus, victorious freestyling began in 1987, when Vladimir Aleinik won the USSR Cup. 1992 saw the emergence of the national team, where training was based on the experience gained in related sports involving complex coordination, such as acrobatics, gymnastics, trampoline, diving, which were quiet advanced in the country. As early as 1996, Vasily Vorobiew came top in the World Cup; two years later, Dmitry Dashtchinsky became a bronze medallist at the Olympics in Nagano. At the World Championships in Canada in early 2001, Alexei Grishin won the highest award for the republic.
