BIATHLON 2002

Having won all the four gold medals of the biathlon tournament at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Ole Einar Bjorndalen from Norway became the most titled biathlete for the whole history of this sport. All in all, Bjorndalen has already won 5 Olympic gold medals. The legendary Ole Einar won his first gold medal in sprint race in Nagano.
This race is also memorable for the Belarusian athletes. Many biathletes, including Alexander Popov who is a member of the Belarusian team, overcame a major part of the distance, but the organizers had to cancel the contest due to a snowstorm that began suddenly. The next day the Norwegian became a champion. And Aleksei Aidarov's bronze increased the number of medals won by the Belarusian biathletes.
Svetlana Paramygina, a member of our team contesting under the Belarusian flag, opened an account of our Olympic awards in this sport. She won a silver medal at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer.
The first success of Belarusian biathlon was achieved in the 90s of the 20 century, when our National team was allowed to represent Belarus abroad. Since 1993 our National team has never returned home without medals, be it World Championships or World Cup tournaments. Our fans always watch men's relay races with special attention, where the Belarusian ambitions are the highest Oleg Ryzhenkov, Viktor Drachev, Aleksei Aidarov, and Rustam Valliulin — these are the biathletes who took third place at the last World Championships in 2003.
The strategy of Aleksei Popov, who is the chief coach now, and the efforts of the whole collective of coaches to form a national team have been crowned with success. At present the Belarusian National team is a monolithic collective ready to fulfill the most difficult tasks. And the presence of Vladimir Drachev and Elena Zubrilova among our biathletes, who have expressed their wish to train themselves in the Belarusian team, has inspired all the biathlon fans and the rising sports generation.
The forthcoming 2004 European Championships will give a good chance to improve the position of Belarus as one of the world biathlon centers. The Raubichi sports complex, where biathlon competitions were held many times the highest level, has been chosen the venue for the Championships.
