DISCOBOLUS (SYDNEY 2000)

The events, which took place in the sector for throwing the discus at the Olympic Games in Sydney, had surprised I even specialists. As a result of her third try, Ellina Zvereva threw the discus powerfully up to the mark of 68m that none of her rivals could reach. A gold medal was put down to the account of the Belarusian team. At that time Zvereva was 41 years old. At such an age no athlete has ever conquered the Olympic heights and this unique achievement will remain in history forever.
Named after the famous cinema actress Ellina Bystritskaya by her father, the future champion adopted from her not only her name, but also her artistry and staunchness to stand the tests of life. Her father especially insisted on two voiced consonants, associating his beloved daughter's name with Hellene, inhabitants of Hellas and initiators of the Olympic games. Thus, her path to the Olympic glory was predetermined in her childhood.
The Sydney gold medal was a deserved compensation for the tests, which fate had put her to. After starting to go in for throwing the discus in 1979, Ellina made her debut at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul and took fifth place. On the eve of the Olympiad a serious vertebral column injury befell her. She could not even move her left leg. She was out of the USSR team and found herself alone face to face with her problems. Now the cheerful athlete recollects that there was a period of time when she, her husband, and her coach Viktor Bochin had to change vodka coupons for eggs, because they were the cheapest food for her then. And only thanks to her amazing spiritual staunchness, the athlete could get out of the wheelchair.
At a press conference after her victory in Sydney Ellina said: "I do not feel my age at all. And is it an age? Throwing the discus is my work and I admire it. I am very happy." And the Sydney gold was Zvereva’s second Olympic award. Earlier she won a bronze medal at the previous Olympic Games in 1996.
Life goes on ... If Ellina herself does not break her rivals' peace, then she will entrust it to her daughter who makes progress in academic rowing that inspires optimism.
