| THE CHURCH OF THE SAVIOR AND TRANSFIGURATION. POLATSK
The Church of the Savior and Transfiguration (the Church of the Savior) is a unique monument of Belarusian sacral architecture of the mid-12th century which has retained its original appearance and is the highest point of Polatsk school of architecture. In the 19th century it underwent partial reconstruction.
The Church was built by the Polatsk architect Ioann on a high bank of the Palata River in ll28-1156 as a cathedral church of the Monastery of the Savior and St. Euphrasinya of Polatsk to the order of its founder, Euphrasinya of Polatsk.
It is a relatively small (8x12 meters) rectangular three-nave six-pillar cross-and-domical church with one apse.
The building was made of thin brick and then plastered and whitewashed. Once inside, one is amazed to see absolutely massive constructions and an unusually thick western wall housing a staircase leading to the cell which was occupied by Euphrasinya of Polatsk.
Simplicity of the church plan, compact interior space, tiered development of composition, monumentality, as well as distinctive (12th century) fresco painting are features characteristic of architecture of the times. The facade reproduces the interior structure of the church with slender vertical pilasters spanned by arches. A high drum is pierced by recesses of oblong narrow windows with a graceful arcature band above them. The Church of the Savior and Transfiguration is designated a State Historical and Cultural Heritage site of the Republic of Belarus and is rightly considered to be one of the symbols of national artistic culture.
