| THE MIR CASTLE
The Mir Castle is a monument of Belarusian civil architecture of the 16th — 18th centuries. Magnate Yuri Ilyinich built it in the vicinity of the Mir settlement, Korelichi district, and Grodno region. Since 1568 it had belonged to the Radziwills, then to the Vitgensteins and Svyatopolk-Mirskys.
Throughout its century-long history the Castle has witnessed many historical events. The sightseeing attraction of the Castle is its towers about 25 meters high.
As a result of sieges in 1655, 1706, 1812, the monument of architecture was considerably destroyed. In view of its great historical and architectural significance, in the 70s of the 20th century works were undertaken to preserve it. Since 1969 the Castle has been under full-scale restoration. In 1994 the UNESCO placed the Mir Castle in the top category of monuments of world culture. On November 29, 2000 the UNESCO entered the Mir Castle in the List of World Heritage Site.
