| VITEBSK
Vitebsk (Vitbesk) appeared on the high left bank of the Western Dvina River at the confluence with the Vitba River (from which it has received its name). Its first records were found in the 10th century. Since 1101 it was the center of the independent Vitebsk Principality.
In the 12th — 13th centuries it was a large trade and handicraft town on the way from the Varangians to the Greeks'; the popular Vetche played a key role in its social, political and economic life.
The warriors of Vitebsk together with those of Novgorod and Pskov repulsed the invasions of crusaders: they took part in the Neva Battle in 1240 and in the Ice Slaughter in 1242.
In 1597 Vitebsk was granted the Magdeburg Right and allowed to have its own coat of arms.
Modern Vitebsk is the largest industrial and cultural center of the Vitebsk region. Beginning with 1992 Vitebsk holds a pop festival “Slavyansky Bazar” every year.
Vitebsk is the homeland of Mark Chagall, a painter of wold significance, whose creative works are full of his personal reminiscences about his native city.
