POLOTSK

Polotsk is the most ancient city in Belarus. Its first records refer to 862. It was founded at the confluence of the Western Dvina and Polota Rivers (hence the name appeared).
In the 10th — 13th centuries it was the center of the ancient eastern and Slavic principality (Polotsk Principality), in the 14th — 16th centuries it was the largest city of the Polish-Lithuanian State Its advantageous geographical location stimulated the development of trade and the growth of its citizens' wealth.
In the middle of the llth century a majestic Sophia cathedral was built in the city. In the 12th century an original Polotsk school of architecture was formed, some of its monuments have been preserved hitherto. In 1498 Polotsk was granted the Magdeburg Right.
Throughout its century-old history the city has been and still remains a spiritual and cultural center of our country. It has given the world such outstanding personalities as Euphrosyne Polotskaya, Frantsisk Skorina, and Simeon Polotsky. The first Orthodox Church (llth century) was built in the city and in the llth — 14th centuries there was the most ancient Byelorussian library there.
Today Polotsk is a city of glorious history and old traditions.
