| IGNAT DOMEYKO
The year 2002 marked the 200th anniversary of Ignat Ippolitovich Domeyko.
Ignat Domeyko was born on July 31, 1802 in the country estate of Medvedka, Novogrudok district In 1823 he was arrested for the participation in the democratic and patriotic movement, and expelled from Vilno. In 1832 Domeyko emigrated to France.
In 1838 Domeyko was invited to work in Chile. Today it is impossible to count all the services Domeyko has done to the Chileans. He organized a service of metrology, designed and built a new water pipe-line, introduced a metric system of measures and weights in Latin America for the first time, was engaged in library science, setup chemical and mining laboratories, arranged three museums, and supervised the construction of mines. For Domeyko Chile became his second Home.
January 23, 1889, when Ignat Domeyko died, was declared a day of national mourning in Chile. One of the port towns (Puerto Domeyko), a volcanic mountain range in the Andes (Cordillera de Domeyko) 350 km long, a mineral (domeykite) and a flower (viola domeykona) discovered by him were named after Domeyko. A museum was set up in his house and a monument to the Great Educator (Grande Educator) was erected in Santiago.
