| YANKA KUPALA A Byelorussian poet, playwright, publicist, translator, classic of the Byelorussian literature, one of the founders of the modern Byelorussian literature and literary language, people's poet of Byelorussia (1925), Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Byelorussia (1928) and of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine (1929), and a public figure.
He was born on July 7, 1882 on the farm of Vyazynka, Vileika district, Vilensk province (now Molodechno district) in the family of a leaseholder.
The main idea of all Kupala's works is the national, social and spiritual liberation of man. The greatest achievement of Yanka Kupala and of the Byelorussian literature, as a whole, at the beginning of the 20th century is his collection. "Along the Road of Life". Kupala's poems "The Mound", "A Dream on the Mound", "She and Me", "Bondarovna" and "The Lion's Grave" (1910-1913) were considered folklore and romantic. His plays are put on at present too.
He perished tragically on June 28, 1942 in Moscow where he was in evacuation. The urn with Kupala's ashes was, brought to Minsk in 1962 and reburied in the Military cemetery.
