| YAKUB KOLAS A Byelorussian poet, prose-writer, publicist, scientist, teacher, one of the founders of the Byelorussian literature and literary language, people's poet of Byelorussia (1925), Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Byelorussia (1928), Honored Scientist of Byelorussia (1944), twice State Prize laureate of the USSR.
Yakub Kolas displayed his abilities for literature during his studies at the Teachers' Training Seminary. He has broadened significantly the thematic and genre-stylistic range of the Byelorussian literature, has enriched it with new motives, images and figurative means.
Yakub Kolas' epic poems "The New Land" (1923) and "Symon-Musician" (1925) belong to the number of his greatest achievements and to the Byelorussian literature of the 19th- 20th centuries as a whole. The trilogy "At the Crossroads", which Kolas completed in 1954, exerted great influence on the formation of the Byelorussian novel.The Minsk Printing Plant, Vitebsk Drama Theater, Institute of Literature, Central Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Byelorussia, many squares and streets of Byelorussian towns and cities were named after Yakub Kolas.
