EUPHROSYNE POLOTSKAYA
(EUPHROSYNE OF POLOTSK)
Euphrosyne Polotskaya (secular name Predslava), her years of life: presumably 1102 or 1104—1173.
She was born in Polotsk. She was Knyaz George's daughter and Vseslav Charodey's granddaughter. At 12 Predslava took a decision to refuse the secular life, settled in a cell and in about 1124 founded a nunnery that was later named Spas Euphrosyne. There were different schools here, languages and a written language were taught; iconpainters, mural painters and jewelers worked here. Thanks to Euphrosyne, a Spas stone temple was erected (in about 1132). Lazar Bogsha, a craftsman of Polotsk, made a six-ended cross to her order—a unique pattern of applied arts, a masterpiece of world significance. In her declining years she maid a pilgrimage to the Middle East and Jerusalem, received an audience with Patriarch Luke, visited all the places sacred to the Christians, but: soon she fell ill and died. First she was buried in the St. Theodosius convent (near Jerusalem) and in 1187 she was reburied in the Kiev Pechersk-Lavra. In 1910 her remains were ceremonially brought to Polotsk to the Spas-Euphrosyne nunnery. She was officially canonized in 1984.
