2012 OLYMPIC GAMES

This official commemorative silver coin marks the occasion of the Olympic Games 2012 in London and is dedicated to team handball. Handball is a team game first introduced to the Olympic Games in 1936 in Berlin, in the then more popular form of field handball. The modern indoor game is faster and more athletic; it celebrated its Olympic debut in 1972 in Munich. It has remained on the Olympic Games' program since then. In contrast, field handball is practically no longer played.
The motif of this pure silver Belarusian commemorative coin to celebrate the Olympic Games boasts an unusual design. The backdrop has a structure indicative of a handball whereas the pictogram-like markings symbolise, in the foreground, the Tower Bridge, one of London's most iconic landmarks, overlain with a typical handball scene; an attacker in mid-stride being warded off by a defender.
In 2008, the national team of Belarus qualified again for the European Handball Championship. Although the handball club of SKA Minsk celebrated its major international successes during the 1980s and early 1990s, the game of handball continues to be very popular in Belarus.
