| SYMON THE MUSICIAN
Symon-Muzyka ("Symon the Musician"), one of the most famous works by the classic of Belarusian literature Yakub Kolas, is a poetic fairy tale about the fate of a gifted musician, his quest for the truth and sense of life. It is a kind of a hymn to the folk art as an eternal source of spiritual power of mankind. At the same time, this is a writing of a profound philosophical importance with marvelous subtle lyrics in which the author provides his vision of the role and significance of a talented person. The image of Symon is a romantic picture of a spiritually sublime boy gifted by nature. It is symbolic that the development of his abilities was to a great extent influenced by his grandfather Kurila upon whose death the boy inherited the violin and the fiddlestick. Beginning his life journey in his hometown, where his talent was not properly appreciated which resulted in his alienation, Symon, in keeping with the plot, goes through several stages of his development. At first, he wanders and makes a precarious living by giving casual performances, then gets into a humiliating bondage to an innkeeper, and finally finds himself in a prince's castle as an exotic funny toy. However, despite all the rigors of life, no one succeeds in destroying his craving for beauty, music, and art. The key symbols of the fairy tale in the design of the coin - a village hut, an inn, a castle, as well as a violin, landscape, a spike let, and lime tree leaves - vividly depict the stages of the making of talent and development from boyhood to manhood.
