Belavezhskaya Pushcha

Belavezhskaya Pushcha straddles the border between the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Poland. It is one of the largest forests of the European plains which has been preserved to the present day in a virtually primeval state. It is divided by the national borders into two parts - Bialowieza National Park in Poland with an area of 10,502 hectares and Belavezhskaya Pushcha National Park, the State Nature Protection Institution, with an area of 152,962 hectares which was established in Belarus.
Unique tracts of woodland rich in species and giant trees typical of natural virgin forests are the place for biodiversity concentration. As many as 1,024 species of higher tracheophytes, 270 species of muscoids, 292 species of lichens, and around 600 species of various mushrooms grow there. The forest's fauna is represented by 250 species of birds, 59 species of mammals, 7 species of reptiles, 11 species of amphibians, 27 species of fish, and over 12,000 species of invertebrates. Many of those are on the Red List of the Republic of Belarus. Among the inhabitants of the National Park the zubr, or the European bison, inscribed on the IUCN Red List is of particular interest. Throughout centuries-old history Belavezhskaya Pushcha changed hands many times and used to be dignitaries' hunting ground. In 1409, the Grand Duke Jagaila forbade hunting therein, having reserved the right to hunt for himself and his cousin Vytaut. It was in that year that the making of the forest’s wildlife conservation regime which will pass its 600th anniversary in 2009 began.
It is one of the most noted nature sites not only in the Republic of Belarus but also in the world. In 1992, the tract of the most preserved ancient forest was included, by UNESCO's decision, on the World Natural Heritage List (the first nature site in the former USSR to receive such high title). In 1993, Belavezhskaya Pushcha was granted the status of a biosphere nature reserve; and in late 1997, the Council of Europe awarded it, as one of model nature protection institutions on the continent, the European diploma. In 2006 and 2007, the National Park was presented with the gold medal in the "Brand of the Year" contest’s “Heritage” nomination for the preservation of natural resources as well as historic and cultural heritage.
