| THE SNOW QUEEN
Hans Christian Andersen, a famous Danish author, tells a touching story about a small girl who succeeds, by the power of her love, in overcoming the magic of the Snow Queen and saving the sworn brother of hers. The Snow Queen is an ode to love, a fairy tale which raises problems that are common to all mankind and are of general philosophical nature: what beauty, benignity, power, and fortitude are.
The tale begins with the story of the splinters of a broken magic mirror that has the power to distort the appearance of things reflected in it. When such splinters get into people's eyes and hearts, they make their eyes like the troll-mirror itself, only showing them the bad and ugly in things and people, and hearts frozen like a block of ice, inhuman and cruel. The Snow Queen herself is a complicated character, both attractive and repulsive at the same time. Her look gives you the shivers; but despite this, you have your eyes glued on her face - tender, beautiful, but cold. The author seems to emphasize that human's inner world, the standards of ethics and morality are much more important than appearance. It is exactly these qualities that Kay and especially Gerda demonstrate. On top of everything, the storyteller shows the reader modest charm of northern nature and reveals the way of life of the Nordic peoples.
Andersen put into his fairy tale profound Christian notions of love and human relations. For example, he introduces the symbol of a rose - an ancient Christian symbol of love. The tale asserts that good feelings, the power of moral perfection of man, and his steady advancement towards the set goal guarantee better life.
