THE VICTORY

At 22:43 Central European Time on May 8, 1945, in Berlin's suburb Karlshorst the German delegation signed an act of unconditional surrender. However, the last fighting of World War II ended only the day after, because a host of raving zealous Nazis and surviving SS-men who ran amok refused to lay down their arms and therefore force had to be used. It is for this reason that some countries mark the occasion on May 8, while most nations celebrate May 9 as the first day of peace - the Victory Day.
The Battle of Berlin was one of the last in a series of bloody battles of the Great Patriotic War. Having broken a fierce resistance, the Soviet troops were in full control of the city by the end of April 30. And though street fighting still continued in some sectors, the Banner of Victory was raised over the Reichstag at the end of the same day by the scouts of the 756th Rifle Regiment sergeant Mikhail Yegorov and junior sergeant Meliton Kantaria. Incidentally, red flags over the Reichstag were erected by many units storming the fascist den. The reverse of the coin features one of such historical episodes.
The Order of Victory has become a popularly accepted symbol of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. It was established on November 8, 1943, and awarded only to Generals and Marshals for "successful operation within the framework of one or several fronts resulting in a radical change of the strategic situation in favor of the Red Army". 11 Soviet military leaders were awarded this Order, three of them received it twice, for special merits in the war. The image of this decoration appears on the front of the coin.
