| The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, The 80th Anniversary
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (hereinafter-the "NASB") was founded on the basis of the Institute of Belarusian Culture which was reorganized into the Academy of Sciences on October 13,1928. The inauguration ceremony took place on January 1,1929.
Since its inception, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was headed by prominent research workers and organizers of science: V.M. Ignatovsky (1929 -1931), P.O. Gorin (1931 -1936), I.Z. Surta (1936 -1937), K.V. Gorev (1938 -1947), A.R. Zhebrak (1947), N.I. Grashchenkov (1947 - 1951), V.F. Kuprevich (1951-1969), N.A. Borisevich (1969 -1987), V.P. Platonov (1987 -1992), L.M. Sushchenya (1992 - 1997), and A.P.Voytovich (1999 - 2001). M.V. Myasnikovich, PhD, Professor of Economics, a statesman and public figure, took office in 2001.
About 17 thousand persons, of whom more than 200 are academicians and associate academicians, 550 have a PhD, and around 2000 have an MSc, work these days at the institutes, scientific and practical centers, organizations, and enterprises of the NASB. More than 380 employees are the winners of the Lenin Prize, the State Prize of the USSR, the State Prize of the BSSR, and the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus. 14 received the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor and three research workers the Hero of Belarus.
In the 80 years of its existence, the Academy of Sciences established reputable scientific schools and produced world-famous scientists. It has a strong record of great scientific accomplishments in practically all areas of scientific research and development which are widely known and highly acclaimed in Belarus and abroad.
Research findings of academicians E.G. Konovalov (physics, 1972), A.A. Akhrem (chemistry, 1975), N.A. Borisevich (physics, 1977), F.I. Fiodorov (physics, 1980), and V.I. Votyakov (medicine and biology, 1986), associate academician V.S. Ulashchik (medicine and biology, 1991), and V.A. Lapina, MSc (Chemistry), (biophysics and biochemistry, 1991) were registered in the former USSR as scientific discoveries.
For the development of science, economy, and culture, as well as the training of highly skilled scientific staff, the NASB was awarded the Order of the Peoples' Friendship (1975) and the Order of Lenin (1978), and nine academic institutes were given the orders of the USSR.
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus aims its efforts at ensuring the country's innovative and economic development, cultural progress and promoting the well-being of people.
