| ZAKAZNIK LIPICHANSKAYA PUSHCHA
The natural protected area - State Landscape Zakaznik Lipichanskaya Pushcha - of 15,2 thousand hectares has been established between the Nyoman and Shchara Rivers.
Numerous uplands, ranges of hills, and ridges of ancient dunes make its landscape unique. The middle Nyoman meanders across the northern part of the protected territory. There are many oxbow lakes, shallow waters, sand bars, and sand islets in its bed. Large meadows covered in a host of flowers, flood plane lakes and river branches, mighty oak forests, as well as light, dry, and clean pine forests of the land between the rivers are noted for their extraordinary beauty.
As many as 17 plant species growing within the confines of the natural protected area are on the Red List of the Republic of Belarus. They include the Pyramidal bugle, Frog orchid, Turk's-cap lily, Broad-leaved marsh orchid, Common European toothwort, and others. The wildlife reserve provides a habitat for 31 rare animal species such as crustaceans - the Noble crayfish; insects - the Moss carder-bee and Dor beetle; fish - the Brown trout, Vimba, and Barbel; birds - the Crane, Goosander, Common kingfisher, Little tern. Golden plover, Lesser spotted eagle, and Common kestrel; and mammals - the Dormouse and Badger.
The Turk's-cap lily and Common kingfisher are shining examples of the area's wildlife,
Turk's-cap lily (Lilium martagon), A herbaceous bulbous perennial growing to 120 cm fall. It produces broad lance-shaped leaves and large mottled pendulous flowers with six elongated recurved rose petals.
Single specimens or clumps of the Turk's-cap lily normally can be found in broad-leaved and mixed coniferous-broad-leaved forests. It grows well in partial shade and fertile soils.
Common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). A small bright-colored bird with a comparatively long stout bill and short tail. It is bright metallic blue in the upper parts. Its auricular regions and under parts are warm chestnut; the throat is ochre white; the bill is dark; and the legs are red.
The Common kingfisher is a bird of the waterside nesting on steep wooded banks where it burrows holes. The living creature feeds mainly on small fish and occasionally catches water beetles and frogs. It is a migratory bird which sometimes winters in Belarus in non-freezing bodies of water.
