| The 60th anniversary of victory
In the summer of 1944, in the course of the strategic Operation Bagration, the Red Army set out on the liberation of Byelorussia from the Nazi aggressors. The scope of hostilities is evidenced by the fact that four fronts -the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd Byelorussian Fronts and the 1st Baltic Front launched a simultaneous offensive. They were opposed by Germany's Army Group Center.
Initially, the Minsk offensive operation was the principal one. Attacking along converging lines, units of the three Soviet fronts met at the approaches to Minsk on June 28. Hundreds of thousands of Hitler's troops were enticed into traps at Yezerishche, Vitebsk, Moguiliov, and Bobruisk and surrendered or were routed shortly thereafter.
In the early hours of July 3, the advance force units of the 2nd Guards Tank Corps broke through the defenses of Minsk in the east, while the 1st Guards Tank Corps fought its way into the city from the south. As a result of dashing Soviet attacks, the bulk of the Wehrmacht's Fourth and Ninth Armies - in total, 105,000 troops - were caught in the "Minsk trap".
This historic episode of the Great Patriotic War which was borrowed from the operational maps served as a basis for the image on the coin honoring the 60th anniversary of the Victory.
