| Brest “Fortress Hero”
Nazi Germany launched an offensive against the Soviet Union at 03:15 Berlin time on June 22, 1941 On the very first day of hostilities, the Wehrmacht's 45th Infantry Division sustained unprecedented casualties -21 commissioned officer and 290 men and non-commissioned officers were killed while storming the Brest Fortress.
The facts prove that by 09 a.m. the enemy had already forged a tight ring around the fortress while its defenders - 3-4 thousand soldiers, officers, frontier guards, officers' wives and children - came under heavy shelling and bombardment. The enemy even succeeded in breaking through the Terespol gate into the fortress, but failed to get an immediate control of it. Protracted fighting ensued. The Hitlerites undertook an all-out storm of the fortress on June 29-30, using air power, armored vehicles, and flame throwers. For two days and nights it was a real hot place, the hardest stones and bricks could not bear it for long, melting and flowing down like glassy icicles... But the following day the enemy's attacks again met with a stiff resistance of the Soviet defenders. The sound of shots and bursts of grenades could be heard in the citadel for more than one month — individual pockets of resistance were not suppressed until after July 20. The last defender of the fortress, heavily wounded Major P.Gavrilov, was taken prisoner on July 23,1941.
The courage and valor of the Brest garrison earned it the honorary title “Fortress-Hero” which was awarded on May 8,1965.
