MINSK. CAPITALS OF EurAsEC COUNTRIES

Minsk is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Belarus. It was founded at the confluence of the Nemiga and Svisloch Rivers. The city dates as far back as 1067, when it was first recorded in the Primary Chronicle in connection with a bloody fratricidal battle on the Nemiga River next to its walls. For the posterity's edification, the same event was also described in the famous Lay of Igor's Warfare. The majority of modern researchers incline to the opinion that the city took its name from a small river, the Menka, a thing not unusual in ancient times.
Once established as an outpost on the southern border of the Principality of Polotsk, it often hindered the advance of invaders. In its 900 plus years history, inexorable time, wars, and fires frequently changed the city's appearance. Regrettably, it is for this reason that Minsk cannot boast extant ancient buildings and other historical monuments.
Minsk had to go through the terrifying ordeal of World War II that left 80% of the city in ruins. While the pre-war population stood at 270,000, in June 1944 a mere 50,000 lived in the city. Nowadays, it is inhabited by nearly 2 million people. No other city in the world has ever experienced such a rate of population growth during half a century. It is for this reason that Minsk is often called a young city. Today Minsk is a rapidly growing and expanding political, economic, and cultural center of a sovereign state. At the same time, carrying on with a creative initiative of their ancestors, Minskovites take care of a few surviving sites of architectural heritage.
Wide and light avenues and streets, spacious squares, diverse and beautiful building ensembles, as well as lush public gardens and parks of modern Minsk are appealing to the eye.
in 2001, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan established the EuroAsian Economic Community (EurAsEC), with Uzbekistan acceding to this organization in 2006. Three other countries - Armenia, Moldova, and Ukraine -were granted observer status.
EurAsEC is an international economic organization which aims at ensuring the dynamic development of its Member States through the coordination of social and economic changes and efficient use of their economic potential; enhancing the effectiveness of cooperation with a view to developing integration processes; and deepening mutual cooperation in different spheres.
