Source of image: www.nbrb.by	THE BELARUSIAN PARTISANS The formation of the partisan movement in the rear of the Nazi invaders in Byelorussia began as early as summer 1941. One of the organizers of partisan detachments were V. Korzn, F. Pavlovsky, M. Shmyriov, who would later become Heroes of the Soviet Union. At the same time, Red Army units that had been commissioned to stay in the enemy rear and engage in sabotage activities were also transformed into partisan detachments. By the end of 1941, nearly 100 partisan detachments and groups had been operating in Byelorussia. By 1943, over 170 000 partisans organized into about 1,000 detachments, 900 of which were arranged into partisan brigades had been fighting the enemy. In the summer of 1944, there were as many as 1,225 detachments in Byelorussia (of which 258 separate detachments) and 213 brigades comprising over 350 000 Byelorussians and up to 25,000 soldiers of reconnaissance parties and raiding forces sent on a special mission. Partisans derailed 11, 128 enemy's troop trains with manpower and materiel, routed 948 enemy garrisons, blew 34 armored trains, 819 railway and 4,710 road bridges, destroyed over 300,000 rails, and annihilated about 18 700 vehicles. Over 140 000 Byelorussian partisans were awarded orders and medals, 88 of whom were given the highest honorary title - Hero of the Soviet Union.
