| Zair Azgur
January 2, 2008 is the centenary of the birth of Zair Azgur - a prominent Belarusian sculptor, the People's Artist of the BSSR and the USSR, the Hero of Socialist Labor, the winner of state prizes, and the holder of the Order of Frantsysk Skaryna.
He embarked on an artistic career in the 1920s at Vitebsk Arts and Practical Institute. As far back as the pre-war time, he started a gallery of sculptural portraits of the representatives of the Belarusian intelligentsia.
Following his work on the portraits of heroes - from 1942 to 1944 - at the Central Headquarters of the Partisan Movement (Moscow), Azgur joined the cultural life of the Byelorussian SSR. Beginning in 1944, he was involved as a chief artist in carrying out renovations to the House of Government in Minsk. For several decades the sculptor invariably represented the art of the republic at the All-Union exhibitions and built memorials in other Soviet republics. His creative work earned him international recognition.
He sculpted busts of Belarusian and world historical personalities and workers of culture, such as Alaiza Pashkevich (Tsiotka), Vera Kharuzhaya, Minai Shmyrou (Batska Minai), Vasil Talash (Dzed Talash), Yanka Kupala, and Petr Masherau, in granite and bronze. Statues by Azgur have been erected in different towns and cities of the Republic of Belarus.
Memorial busts of the hero pilot S.I. Grytsavets and F.E. Dzyarzhynsky, the majestic sculptural ensemble in Yakub Kolas Square, and the bas-relief "In Memory of Fallen Heroes" on the obelisk of Peramoga (Victory) beautify the capital of Belarus. Russia, Dagestan, India, and China boast Azgur's monumental works.
During his long creative life the sculptor produced artistic works that belong to the Belarusian art treasure.
The memorial museum-studio of Zair Azgur, located in 8 Azgur Street, was inaugurated on February 18, 2000 and houses a considerable part of his artworks. The museum not only commemorates the sculptor's life and works of art, but also recreates the lively and highly creative atmosphere of his studio. A.L.
