THRUSH NIGHTINGALE

The non-governmental organization (NGO) "APB-BirdLife Belarus", a Belarusian partner of the world-wide environmental association "BirdLife International", has been running the "Bird of the Year" national campaign since 2000. The main aim of the campaign is to draw public attention to the problems of wild birds. In the past, White Stork (Ciconia ciconia), White Wagtail (Motacilla alba), Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus), House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), House Martin (Delichon urbica), Great Grey Owl (Strix nebulosa), and Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) were voted bird of the year. During the campaign various contests are held, actions are undertaken, and environmental measures are implemented.
The Thrush Nightingale (Luscinia luscinia) has been named bird of the year 2007 based on the following criteria: the bird's public popularity and its distribution - even big cities still boast places where nightingales nest. However, these birds experience certain problems related to the change of their habitat owing to human development.
The nightingale inhabits damp forests with dense undergrowth as well as thickets in grasslands and water meadows. Parks and gardens provide habitats for them in built-up areas. The bird commonly nests on the ground amid well-developed ground vegetation and very rarely on the shrubs, not high above the ground.
Spring migration of nightingales commences in late April - early May. Males are the first to return to their nesting sites, whereupon they start singing. Their singing has several meanings which are meant to attract their mates and let their rivals know that a comfortable place under a bird cherry tree has been already occupied. The song consists of separate complete parts known as warbles. There could be more than 10 such warbles, and the best songster is determined by the number of warbles it sings. No one could be left untouched by the manner of their performance either - quiet sounds rise to a crescendo, and cheerful sounds are followed by sad ones.
The nightingale feeds on small insects, caterpillars, snails, and other invertebrates, feeding them to its nestlings as well. Usually, the bird pecks at the food on the ground, running nimbly beneath the bushes.
Autumn migration to the wintering grounds in south eastern Africa begins in late August.
There are few birds that can challenge the nightingale in terms of human attention, recognition, and respect. This notwithstanding, the man has caused much hindrance by frequently mowing grass in inhabited localities, creating lawns everywhere, cutting bushes, and clearing ground of all dead leaves. All this destroys habitats for the birds that build their nests on the ground or in the bushes rather than improves the environment. There are no even tiny places left in big cities where birds could feel comfortable. We are able to create and preserve the world where both people and birds would feel that way.
