| Alena Aladava. The centenary.
There are many eminent people in the history of Belarusian national culture who by virtue of their dedicated creative work wrote the chronicle of our state. Alena V. Aladava (1907 – 1986), a director of the museum (1944 – 1977), an honoured art worker of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, and an honoured culture worker of Poland, deservedly ranks among them.
Owing to her pro-active work as a director, beginning in 1944, and with state support, the museum collection which had been lost during the Great Patriotic War was recovered practically afresh.
Within three decades, Alena Aladava organized, involving the museum staff, more then a hundred scientific expeditions to different regions of the republic, saving about two thousand works of old Belarusian painting, sculpture, arts and crafts, and early printed books which enlarged, following there restoration, the museum’s holding.
She also acquired unique works of contemporary Belarusian, Russian, and West European art which enabled the National Art Museum to have nowadays, for instance, one of the finest collections of 18th – early 20th –century Russian paintings among former Soviet republics.
In concert with M. I. Baklanau, the architect of the gallery, she dreamed about creating a museum complex in her own inimitable architectural style. The 50th anniversary of the museum building, erected in 1957, is marked these days during the centenary year of Alena Aladava, which is deeply symbolic.
The year 2007 was declared by the museum “The year of Aladava” and in this connection the following arrangements were made. The Mastatskaya Litaratura Publishing House issued the book “Alena Aladava. The museum is her destiny”. An envelope was specially postmarked. Her kith and kin, the museum staff, the artists, and the general public took part in the memorial event which was held at the “native home of Alena Aladava”, our museum. Presentations of the book “A linking thread of times”, a new TV-film, and a commemorative medal bearing her image were made. The “Aladauskiya Chytanni” (readings devoted to Aladava) international jubilee scientific conference was convened at the museum.
The museum staged in her honor an exhibition of works by 19th – early 20th century Russian artists entitled “The captives of beauty” from the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus.
The issuance of silver and copper-nickel commemorative coins by the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus on the occasion of the centenary observance of Alana Aladava is a fitting tribute to the activities and memories of a legendary director, wonderful woman, and personality who sets, to all of us and to me personally, an example of devotion to the native country.
