THE MEMORY OF FASCISM’S VICTIMS

Each nation takes pride in victories won in the struggle for its liberty and independence and reveres the memory of the losses suffered in doing so. Nazi death camps - Auschwitz in Poland and Buchenwald in Germany - have been preserved for the coming generations as a reminder of the fascists' atrocities. In France, the symbol of the losses is Oradur-sur-Glane, in the Czech Republic, Lidice, in Belarus, Khatyn.
In materializing their Generalplan Ost (a special attachment to the Barbarossa military plan), the Nazis slaughtered 2,200 thousand Byelorussians, i.e. one in four. They established nearly 260 death camps, Trostenets being one of them - the fourth concentration camp after Auschwitz, Maidanek, and Treblinka in terms of killed people. Within the three years of occupation, the Hitlerites destroyed 209 Belarusian cities and towns, over 9,200 villages, ruined and looted all factories and plants, collective and state farms, museums and libraries. But especially cynical and brutal were punitive squads which burnt 628 Belarusian villages together with their inhabitants, of which 186 have not risen from the ashes in the post-war years...
Day and night, any season, Khatyn resounds with solemn and, at the same time, grand chime of the bells. It is not only a reminder of the 149 villagers burnt alive, including 76 kids innocent as a babe unborn. This is also a perpetual echo of all big and small tragedies of that horrible war, our eternal grief and an oath to prevent any manifestation of brutality, be that Nazism, racism, or terrorism. Things like this must never repeat themselves in any place.
