| Belarus-China. 15 Years of Diplomatic Relations
On January 20, 2007, the Republic of Belarus and the People's Republic of China will celebrate the 15th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between the two countries.
During this period, both countries have come a long way in building and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation in all spheres of bilateral relations.
Summit meetings, extensive inter-parliamentary contacts and exchanges of delegations representing business and scientific circles of both nations have been of great importance for advancing the Belarusian-Chinese relationships.
Belarus and China share similar views with respect to the core international problems and support each other within the UN and other international organizations. They have signed nearly 70 bipartite treaties and agreements governing political, trade, economic, and regional cooperation, as well as cooperation in the sphere of education, health protection, culture, science and technology, finance, tourism, etc.
China is one of the main trade partners of Belarus. In 2005, it came fifth in terms of the volume of Belarusian trade with and exports to the non-CIS countries and forth in terms of imports. The volume of trade between the two countries amounted to USD 715 million, the Belarusian exports exceeding USD 430 million.
In December 2005, during the visit of the Belarusian government delegation headed by the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander G. Lukashenko to the People's Republic of China, the Parties stated that their bilateral relations attained the level of strategic cooperation and set the task of markedly increasing the volume of mutual trade.
Bilateral cooperation is being actively developed in such spheres as culture, education, science and technology. About 1000 Chinese students are educated in Belarus every year. In 2003, the Republican Center of Sinology "Hieroglyph" was opened within the Belarusian State University and in 2006 the Institute of Confucius was established in Belarus.
The Republic of Belarus will continue to treat the People's Republic of China in future as the main strategic partner in the Asian region in all areas of bilateral cooperation at international institutions.
