| CYCLING
Compared with many other Olympic events that came into modern sport from the ancient world, the history of the cyclists' competitions is rather short. Suffice it to say that a bicycle itself was invented at the turn of the 19th century. Nevertheless, nowadays this vehicle is represented by a wide range of makes: cruisers, mountain bikes, racing bikes; as well as kids bikes, folding and multiple-purpose bikes; traditional bikes, three wheelers and even four wheelers designed for one cyclist or different tandems. But the subject of this article is cycling.
The first world track championship for amateurs was held in 1893 (for professionals in 1895). Men entered world competition in road racing much later - in 1921, whilst it was not until 1958 that women contests were run.
As an independent event, cycling in Belarus originated in the prewar 1940. However, shortly after the war the Belarusian cyclists rather quickly came to the fore. It will suffice to mention that V. Bykov won Belarus' first-ever world track title, while the most successful Belarusian road racer of the time was A. Dokhlyakov. The first gold medal of the world women championships was won by V. Smirnova (Sakhonchik) in Canada in 1976. V. Kaminsky sealed his place in Belarusian cycling history when he became the first rider to win an Olympic gold medal (1976) for the national team. The next Olympic medal was won by our famous racer O. Logvin.
Between 1976 (the Olympic Games in Rome) and 2004 (the Olympic Games in Athens) the Belarusian cyclists won a total of two gold and one bronze Olympic medals; 15 gold and four silver medals of the world championships; and three silver medals and one bronze medal of the European championships. We may rejoice at the success of our juvenile cyclists - eight gold, seven silver, and two bronze medals of the world youth championships. But today we specifically give our praise to and show respect for the famous Belarusian track-racer N. Tsylinskaya who has so far been second to none at her best distance.
We cannot but hope that some day or other we will have our own modern track and special routes for racers, which would be used to train our new gifted athletes and hold top-level competitions.
