| THE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS
The Thousand and One Nights - a famous epic compilation of narratives and novels - has absorbed works of both several generations and various nations inhabiting a huge multinational empire-the Caliphate. The Hindus and the Persians, the Greeks and the Jews, the ancient Egyptians and the BabyIonians, as welI as the Arabic peoples and the tribes of the Medieval Orient - all contributed to this repository of folk culture, fantasy, and wisdom.
This collection of stories is based on the principle of the so-called "framed story" - a narrative technique whereby there is the initial frame story and the framing device incorporated throughout the tales themselves. The stories proceed from this original tale; some are framed within other tales, while others begin and end of their own accord.
Permanent heroes of these stories are the Genie who languishes in a jar for thousands of years and Scheherazade, a young Oriental woman wearing a richly decorated yashmak; while animals, reptiles, and birds act as personages: the camel -the ship of the desert, the snake — the symbol of wisdom, and the bird of paradise - the symbol of love. These tales are characterized by the description of palaces with rich interior, architectural ornamentation and mosaics, and such attributes as Oriental amphorae, a magic carpet, dombra, etc. The tales are florid in style and tuneful: like Arabic decor abhorring a vacuum, they smoothly flow from one story to another and never repeat the plot of the previous ones. Similarly, the design of the coin's reverse changes its images when viewed at different angles.
