| THE SOVIET WARRIORS-LIBERATORS
The large-scale strategic Operation Bagration which began on June 23-26, 1944, involved simultaneously four fronts: the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Belarusian Fronts and the Baltic Front. At the commencement of the offensive, the Soviet command had committed 2.4 million troops, 36,000 artillery pieces and mortars, over 5,200 tanks and assault guns, and approximately 5,300 aircraft. Soviet supremacy in manpower and materiel (at the outset, the German defensive system Vaterland entrusted to Army Group Center comprised 1.6 million troops, 9,500 artillery pieces and mortars, approximately 1,900 tanks, and slightly over 1300 aircraft) as well as thoroughly concealed preparations secured a resounding victory. It should be noted that prior to the operation Byelorussian partisans and members of underground organizations had raided railway, highway, and water communications in the enemy's rear, damaged a lot of wire lines of communication, and forced local engagements on the invaders which had an absolutely demoralizing effect on the enemy.
During 68 days of the operation, the German defensive line was broken through and penetrated as far as 600 kilometers. The Byelorussian territory was fully liberated.
