Chyrvony Bor Nature Reserve

Chyrvony Bor State Reserve with an area of 34.2 thousand hectares has been established in the north of the Republic of Belarus. Its territory is a vast tract of woodland with a host of raised bogs and lakes. Numerous lowlands and depressions which give place to high hills and ridges make its landscapes unique.
There are 13 plant species growing within the confines of the nature reserve that have been listed in the Belarusian Red Book: the dwarf birch, the twin-flower, the sword-leaved helleborine, the cloudberry, the royal helleborine and others. It is inhabited by 28 protected rare animal species. Most of them — the brown bear, the lynx, the Ural owl — live in forest. Such relict birds as the black-throated diver and the goosander breed on the reserve's lakes.
The significance of Chyrvony Bor Reserve for wildlife conservation has been internationally acknowledged. A number of species that are threatened with extinction in Europe, including the golden eagle, the white-tailed eagle, the osprey and the black stork, can be found there.
The reserve's unique fauna and flora boast the European mink and imbricate gladiolus which are pleasing to the eye.
The Imbricate Gladiolus (Gladiolus imbricatus) The Imbricate Gladiolus is a perennial bulbotuberous plant growing to a maximum height of 80 centimeters with a thin upright stem and sword-like leaves. In June - July the spike inflorescence of 5-12 large flowers is formed in the upper part of the stem. Gladiolus petals are brightly-colored and come in reddish or purple violet. They have irregular shape.
Meadows, forest clearings and margins as well as humid open woodlands usually provide habitat for imbricate gladiolus. It grows best in fertile loose soils. Imbricate Gladiolus forms scuttered clumps.

The European mink (Mustela lutreola)
The European mink is an endangered species. Facing competition with the American mink it may vanish from Belarusian fauna in the decades to come. This little graceful furry creature with a supple streamlined body and a relatively short tail is well adapted to aquatic life. Its reddish brown or rich brown fur, dense and short, practically does not get wet. This living thing has small interdigital membranes to help it swim. A distinctive feature of the European mink is a white patch on its muzzle.
