100TH ANNIVERSARY OF BELARUSIAN TRADE UNION MOVEMENT

There has been no larger non-government organization in the world history than trade unions. Emerging in Belarus at the end of the 19th century, trade unions set themselves the goal of, above all, protecting the economic interests of the working people from high-handedness and self-interest of private capital. Of course, in our country they came into being later than in Western Europe and in an environment which was different in terms of the degree of development. However, due to their location and activities, they were affected by international trade union movement to a much greater extent than, for example, trade unions in Russia or in Asian countries in the late 19th-early 20th centuries.
An additional point to emphasize is that trade unions in Belarus emerged after the first workers' political parties had been created and close links with them, particularly with social-democrats, predetermined unions' involvement in political struggle. By 1904, organizational and structural formation of trade unions in Belarus was completed. During the Soviet era, they turned into the largest non-government organization that proved critical for social, economic, and cultural development of Belarusian society.
The Belarusian Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) was established in 1990 at the 17th congress of republican trade unions which declared itself the 1st congress of the BFTU and adopted a new charter. One of the priority areas of the BFTU's activities is to protect constitutional and labor rights of its members. The Federation assists in the development of the Republic of Belarus as a democratic social and law-governed state.
