Source of image: www.nbrb.by	BEAVER At the beginning of the 30s of the 20th century beavers were considered exterminated on the territory of Belarus. But beavers have been saved from complete extermination thanks to the fact that it was forbidden to hunt beavers. In December 1924 an expedition led by Professor A.V. Fedyushin, a famous zoologist, discovered a small beaver colony of 20 settlements in the upper reaches of the Berezina River. Thus, it was decided to found a state reserve of beavers in the upper reaches of the Berezina. In 1979 the Berezina Forest Reserve received a biosphere status and was included in the world network of the UNESCO Program "Man and Biosphere". In 1992 this forest reserve became a member of the Federation of Natural and National Parks of Europe. 789 types of plants grow on its territory; 320 species of vertebrate and 3175 invertebrate animals have been registered here. The main pride of the Berezina Forest Reserve is the aboriginal beaver population. The beaver is considered to be one of the largest rodents. Its maximum weight reaches 35kg and its average weight is 15—18kg.
