| 80YEARS OF THE BELARUSBANK
On December 26,1922 the Council of People's Commissars adopted a resolution to set up savings banks in the country. It started the banking business in Byelorussia. In 1923 Central Savings Bank NQ 16 was opened in Minsk, which began to organize a network of similar savings banks in the country. In two years they numbered 219 and by the beginning of 1933 over a thousand.
In 1987 the USSR reorganized the banking system and, as a result, the Sberbank of the USSR was set up. It consisted of 15 savings banks of the union republics. In 1991 when Byelorussia gained its independence, it adopted a new charter and became independent. In 1995 in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus a limited company "Sberbank — Belarusbank" was set up.
The principal stockholder of the Belarusbank is the state in the person of the Government of the country. Today it is the largest system-forming bank of Belarus with the largest number of affiliates and branches. 57 percent of citizens' money deposited in the banks and 98 percent of credits granted to the population (data of 2002) fall to the share of the Belarusbank. This bank attends to about 30 percent of the foreign trade turnover of the country.
