| PEREGRINE FALCON
Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) is a very rare species of birds of prey listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Belarus. It is commonly found in the northern regions of our country. The bird prefers to settle in sparsely populated sylvan areas with lakes, rivers, bogs, meadows, and fields. They usually nest on high trees in thinned-out woods, next to large bogs, or on forest fringes near high-water beds where it is easier for them to search for food.
However, normally pairs of these birds nest separately. In mid-spring, females lay from 3 to 4 eggs. Sometime abnormalities were observed when there were 1 -2 or, vice versa, 5-6 eggs in a clutch. They are generally incubated by the female; but, if necessary, the male also helps, occasionally, with the incubation of the eggs. Peregrine falcons will vigorously defend their nests. Ornitho¬logists noted cases where the female laid another clutch if the eggs had been lost to large predators early in the nesting season, managing to fledge and rear good offspring.
Under normal conditions, Pere¬grine falcon is extremely cautious, is good at disguising, and therefore it is hard to spot it, let alone to find its nest location.
The gold coin depicting Peregrine falcon has been issued as part of the international coin program dedicated to environment protection. It is inlaid with a natural diamond (the bird's eye).
