THE STONE FLOWER

Fairy tale Kamenny tsvetok ("The Stone Flower") was written by P. Bazhov, the famous Urals' author, folklorist, regional ethnographer, historian, and a gifted editor of folk legends and fairy tales.
What is more important in this world: professional improvement and craftsmanship, quest for an ideal solution and their creative implementation or love, devotion, and loyalty of a loved one? The author reveals a conflict between a man of character and the foundations of a backward society, and shows heroes capable of overcoming numerous life hardships in pursuit of a noble goal. This fairy tale is about the strength of mind of honest people.
Each hero has his/ her own character. For example, the image of Danila the Master, a young gifted mine overman, is the symbol of a creative beginning, while Katerina is the embodiment of the living foundations of her people - she is open to the entire world and earthly life, and demonstrates traditional values of society. In other characters the author reveals both vices and virtues. Seemingly, this nice fairy tale shows us only how the earthly love of an ordinary Russian girl overcame the magic of the almighty Mistress of Copper Mountain. But at the same time it is a repository of internal charm and worldly wisdom, as well as a comprehensive encyclopedia of mining engineering and a precious and ornamental stones handbook.
