| „BRASLAW LAKES“ NATIONAL PARK * HERRING GULL
The “Braslaw Lakes” National Park was established in August 1995. This picturesque laky region consisting of more than 30 large and small lakes connected by rivers and streams is located to the north-west of Belarusian Paazorye.
During the last ice age (18 - 20 thousand years ago) this territory was covered by vast ice fields. The glacier left a hilly landscape and many lakes. The largest of them are: Lake Drivyaty, Lake Snudy, Lake Voiso and Lake Nedrovo. Out of 800 species of plants that grow in the National Park 20 are listed in the Red Book as rare or endangered species. The following mammals can also be found here: otters, beavers, badgers and lynxes. About 30 species of fish inhabit the lakes.
About 200 species of birds have been found in the National Park, 45 of which are listed in the Red Book. There are 16 islands in Lake Snudy. They are home to one of the biggest colonies of gulls in Belarus, dominated by the herring gulls. The nests of the herring gulls in Belarus were first discovered in 1982 and in Braslaw region as early as 1983. Nowadays they can be found not only in all large bodies of water and rivers, but also in cities.
The herring gull is a large bird which is almost as large as a goose. The span of its wings is up to 1.5 meters. Males and females have the same color. The bird has white feathering, bluish-grey back and top of the wings; wing tips are black with white spots. Young birds are whitish, but they are brown spotted almost uniformly. They obtain adult snow-white coloring when they reach the age of 5 years.
Herring gulls come to their breeding grounds in late March. They build nests from vegetation on lake islands' ground. Both male and female build a nest, incubate 2-3 eggs for about one month, males sharing equally in incubation, and feed chicks. When nestlings are about 1.5 months old they begin learning to fly. In autumn young gulls ringed in the National Park can be found hundreds kilometers away from the places of their birth almost in all Baltic coast countries as well as in Croatia and Italy.
The herring gull is omnivorous. It feeds on fish, molluscs, insects, small rodents, birds' chicks and eggs, and berries. At present, about 250 pairs of herring gulls nest in the Braslaw Lakes National Park. It is the largest nesting population of this species of gulls in our country.
