| MUTE SWAN
The Narochansky National Park was set up in July 1999 to preserve the unique natural complexes and the heritage of culture of this region. It is situated in the northwest of Belarus. The territory of the National Park comprises three groups of lakes: Naroch, Myadel, and Bolduk.
The mute swan is the largest flying bird in Belarus, entered in the Red Book.
At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, as a result of barbaric destruction, the mute swan disappeared from the territory of Belarus and up to the 70s of the last century it was found very seldom. Only in 1976, almost a century later, mute swans settled down on Lake Beloye in the Myadel district. At present about 900 couples of mute swans nest on the whole territory of Belarus.
Mute swans are monogamous. One and the same couple of birds always nest on the same water reservoir. They acquire progeny in their fourth year.
The restoration of mute swan population goes on in Belarus. We have all reasons to think that as a result of measures takes in time to protect these birds, their quantity will be restored on all the water reservoirs suitable for nesting.
