Belovezha Forest Reserve

The Belovezha Forest Reserve is one of the oldest and titled forest reserves in the world. In 1992 the Belovezha State National Park was included in the List of World Heritage of Mankind in accordance with the UNESCO decision. In 1993 it achieved the status of a biosphere forest reserve and in 1997 the Council of Europe awarded a special diploma to the Belovezha Forest Reserve.
The Belovezha forest has preserved its primeval appearance and is populated with relic plants and animals, many of which have irrevocably disappeared in other places together with cutout forests. Here the population of aurochs (mammoth contem-poraries), which have almost disappeared on Earth, has revived.
The Belovezha forest has a very long history. As an old virgin forest, it is mentioned in Ipatyev's chronicle that recorded its name in 983. As a guarded natural territory, the forest has been known since the 14 century. The history of this ancient land is so closely interwoven with the history of aurochs that they assert as if aurochs have been preserved here thanks to the Belovezha forest and the latter — thanks to aurochs.
