FOX

This animal of the genus Vulpes and related to the dogs is widespread all over Belarus. Its body is 70—80cm long, its tail is 36—45cm long, and its weight is 5—7kg. Its hair is downy, reddish with a yellow tint on the spine and sides. Foxes can also be of silvery, dark-brown, dark-gray and other coloration.
The fox lives in forests, glades, coppices, drained peat marshes and fields. It is a beast of prey. It usually hunts actively at night. It eats mouse-type rodents, birds, hares, insects, and berries. It can often catch poultry.
The fox lives in a hole that often has two or three passages. Sometimes it occupies burrows of other animals. It matures in the second year of life; its mating period is in February — March. Its pregnancy lasts 49—58 days; afterwards the female fox gives birth to 3—7 puppies. The fox lives 5—7 years.
Thirty years ago the fox was considered to be a valuable animal in Belarus because of its fur. In the 70s of the 20th century up to 15,000 fox skins were stored up annually. At present there is no demand for its fur and people stopped hunting it; as a result, the number of foxes has noticeably increased.
In Belarusian folklore the fox often takes the part of the main character of a tale. It is clever, sly and can easily disentangle itself from an awkward situation. In the tales it is a fox of fashion, likes to dress up and wear jewelry. That's why it is natural that the first Belarusian commemorative coin decorated with precious stones was dedicated to the fox.
