BROWN BEAR

The brown bear is a rare species of mammals. Its body is up to 240cm long, its height in the withers is 130cm, and its weight is 240—400kg, but sometimes it reaches 640kg. The brown bear has been entered in the Red Book of Belarus. At present there are 103 individuals of this species in the country. The main places of habitat are concentrated in the northern part of the republic in Poozerye, Vitebsk region, and in the north of the Minsk region. Bears used to come to the Osipovichi district, Mogilev region, and even further south along the flood-lands of the Berezina River. In 1981 there was a case when bears came to the Pripyat Forest Reserve. The largest population of brown bears is about 30 individuals and it is localized on the territory of the Berezina Biosphere Forest Reserve. Its typical places of habitat are dense old-aged forests infrequently visited by man. Though the bear is referred to a beast of prey, it is omnivorous what concerns its food. In summer bears wander alone about the forest in search of edible stems and rhizomes, trying to find out insect larvae in the grass and stumps, and dig up anthills. Now and then they attack elks, wild boars, and other big animals. In autumn bears fatten their buttocks and regale on acorns, nuts, and crab apples. Before snow falls, the bear makes its den and falls asleep in it for the whole winter.
In June — July bears have their mating season. The pregnancy lasts 7 months and in January — February from 1 to 4 bear-cubs of about 500g in weight are born in the snow-covered den. In spring after gaining weight of about 40kg, the bear-cubs leave the den. The male bear does not take part in bringing up its bear-cubs. They spend the first winter together with their mother and leave her only in the second year of life. Bears become mature at the age of 3. They live up to 30—40 years.
Possessing great strength, these animals are notable for good nature, playfulness, and intellect They can be easily trained and tamed. To preserve the population of brown bears in Belarus, it is forbidden to hunt them.
