Source of image: www.nbrb.by	THE 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BANKING SYSTEM On January 3, 1922 the Belarusian office of the State Bank of the RSFSR (a year later it was reorganized into the State Bank of the USSR) began its work in Minsk. This date is considered to be the start of setting up the Belarusian banking system. Though it is worth mentioning that banks also functioned on the territory of Belarus in the 19 century, an office of the State Bank of the Russian Empire functioned in Minsk in the same century. In 1923 –1925 branches of the All-Union joint-stock banks were opened and began to function in the republic. In those years a system of local banks was formed, some of this banks after a number of transformations have been functioning up to the present time. As part of the financial system of the USSR, the Belarusian banks have passed through all the stages of formation and development, which fell to the share of Soviet banks. It is three monetary reforms (1922 – 1924; 1947; 1961), the devastating consequences of World War II and the setting up of specialized banks in the late 80s of the 20th century. When the Republic of Belarus gained its independence in 1991, a new stage of development of the banking system began. The law “On the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus” facilitated the emergence of national currency – the Belarusian rouble; private banks were quickly set up. At present the Belarusian bank system is a classical two-level system and it develops according to the laws of the banking systems of other market-economy countries.
